Dear Editor,

We read with interest the study by Saha et al.[1] published in September–December 2022 issue of the Journal of Bone and Joint Diseases. Saha et al.[1] found that vitamin D (VD) deficiency, insufficiency, and sufficiency were 26.2%, 46.69%, and 27.11% of Indian patients with chronic low backache (CLB) respectively. Accordingly, Saha et al.[1] recommended that supplementation of these patients with VD should be taken into consideration. We believe that the aforementioned study results and recommendations should be cautiously considered. India like other tropical countries has abundant sunshine. However, hypovitaminosis D is a distressing health threat that affects different age groups. The prevalence of hypovitaminosis D in India is reported to vary from 30 to 91.2 percent among adults.[2] Therefore, we believe that accomplishing a case-control study encompassing a cases group with CLB and an age and gender-matched control group is a suitable alternative to accurately assess VD profiles among Indian patients with CLB.
